WOYZECK, BENEATH THE SHADOW

Based on Buchner’s drama, Plefsis proposes a non verbal adaptation of the play. Striving to survive in a world that disgraces and humiliates human being, Woyzeck cannot escape suffering. He suffers both mentally and physically. Unable to react to the disgraceful working and living conditions of his environment, he deteriorates everyday and finally, he crashes.

Plefsis’ performance places Woyzeck and Maria in the centre of an ongoing narration, delivered in the language of physical theatre. Through changes in the figure that occur onstage, thee performers interpret the drama’s characters on the one hand and on the other, they play also role of a chorus-narrator that functions as the animators of the whole story.

The same duality exists in the scenery, as the scenic objects and constructions denote a realistic place and a psychological one at the same time (i.e. the closet denotes Woyzeck’s house and also his thoughts, what is going on in his head). Therefore, the scenic constructions transform and take new shapes as the performance unfolds and follows the changes in the psychological condition of the heroes.
